About Adopting

Selecting a Dog or Cat

Photos and descriptions of the dogs and cats we have available are updated on our website regularly but there are often animals we hear about that are not yet part of our system. We recommend that you send in an application if you want a certain breed or size even if you don't see it listed. We will let you know if we hear of anything that meets your needs. Attending our adoption day on Fridays is the best way to meet the dogs and cats. (See the calendar of events for specifics.) Cats can also be seen all week in condos throughout town. If the animals will not be at adoption days we can arrange another time to meet individually. Shamrock does not have a facility. Most of our animals are in owners' homes or foster homes; some are kenneled by the people who have rescued them and then bring to adoption days as schedules permit.

The Application Process

If you are interested in adopting an animal from Shamrock, fill out an application (see the links below) and email it to us. Emailed applications are picked up by several people so they are usually processed more quickly than mailed paper copies. Shamrock volunteers work hard to make the best match between the animal and your family, so include the type of dog or cat you like - laid-back, athletic, cuddly, couch-potato, short or long haired, young, old, etc. If you are willing to work with a special needs cat or dog we usually have several of those in need of homes, too.

(Note: right-click on the applicable link below and save the file to your computer. Then, fill out the form and email it to us. None of these are online applications.)

The Trial Visit

We like to give you a couple of weeks to see if your new dog is a good fit in your home. Within the first two weeks after you adopt a dog from us you can return him and we will return your money. (After your application is approved we can arrange a 2-week trial visit before we complete the contract.) It's a good idea to start the visit on a weekend when you will have time to help your new addition get acclimated to your home and family.

The Contract

If we both agree that the adoption will be good for you and the dog/cat, we will proceed with the contract. We have a standard adoption donation of $125 for all animals This covers spay/neutering, worming, microchipping and vaccinations appropriate for the age of the animal. Many animals we help rescue have cost us hundreds of dollars, sometimes more, in veterinary fees; some have cost us much less. Because we are an all-volunteer organization over 93% of all donations go directly towards the care and welfare of the animals. Checks should be made payable to The Shamrock Foundation.

The What Ifs

If the adoption does not work out please contact us immediately. The contract you sign stipulates that the animal must be re-homed through us and not surrendered to a shelter. Since we do not have a facility, you will need to bring the pet to adoption days and keep him until another home can be found. If you have any other questions, please contact us.

Thank you for your interest in the Shamrock Foundation.
